common core reading seminar, six shifts, 2

yesterday i introduced the first "shift" in teaching for the common core language standards -  to have students read more nonfiction texts.  the goal is 50 percent informational by 4th grade, and having the ratio continue to shift to nonfiction as children go up in grades.
the second change involves having science, art, math, social studies, and other teachers think of themselves are reading instructors.
in this way, children will learn reading consistently from primary sources - preferably not textbooks, and multiple books on a subject.

that's it for 2.
4 more to go.

joy to you!
